Meet Kevin
Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne is no stranger to Floyd County. As the
son of Robert Payne, owner of Rome Seed & Feed, Commissioner Payne learned
early in his life the value of hard work, good business sense, and
building customer relations. Those values, as well as his faith in God,
have made Commissioner Payne the leader that he is today.
Born and raised in Floyd County, Commissioner Payne graduated Sigma Cum
Laude from Darlington High School. He went to college at the University of
Georgia, where he graduated with a business degree in Business
Administration and Management and was recognized as a Presidential
Scholar. A dedicated UGA fan, Commissioner Payne can often be found
pulling for the Dawgs every Saturday in the fall that the pig-skin is
thrown around.
After graduating from college, Commissioner Payne served as a general
manager here in North Georgia for a Fortune 500 company. His experience
ranges from being the current Tax Commissioner to managing hundreds of
employees for large corporations and a small, hometown business. From all
of this experience, Commissioner Payne has learned that the bottom line is
that customer service matters most.
After serving in the business community as a manager and leader, former
Tax Commissioner Jim Ford asked Commissioner Payne if he would serve as
his Chief Deputy. When Commissioner Ford retired in December of 2007,
Commissioner Payne assumed the office of Tax Commissioner as directed by
the state of Georgia’s Constitution.
Since becoming Tax Commissioner, Commissioner Payne has continued the
progress made by Commissioner Ford and implemented his own initiatives to
help save Floyd County Citizens tax money.
Commissioner Payne is married to the former Mai Lee Gillian, and together
they have one son, Price (age 1). The Paynes are active members of West
Rome Baptist Church.
Commissioner Payne is an active member of the Rome-Floyd County community.
He is a member of the Seven Hills Rotary Club, Greater Rome Chamber of
Commerce, and the Floyd County Republican Party. He is a graduate of
Leadership Rome, a United Way Cabinet Chairperson, and Mentor in the Rome
City school system. Payne is also a member of the Georgia Association of
Tax Officials, the NRA, and Georgia Right to Life.
